A Sense of Time, A Sense of Place: The Driftless Suite is anchored in the living voice of a
landscape. In August of 2025, I set out to capture the sounds of the Driftless Region of
northwest Illinois - a land left unglaciated during the last ice age, shaped instead by deep
time into steep hills, winding valleys, limestone bluffs, and the quiet persistence of cold-
water streams and springs.
From these recordings - rainfall and distant thunder, wind chimes, cicadas and crickets, the
layered songs of birds - emerged the foundation of the suite. These sounds do not linger at
the edges; they stand at the center of each piece, appearing and reappearing as unifying
motifs. Like the recurring themes of a classical suite, they give shape and continuity, guiding
the listener through a sequence of movements in which each offers a new perspective on
the same elemental materials.
The music folds itself around these natural voices, at times amplifying their presence, at
times dissolving into them, allowing familiar sounds to be heard anew. What emerges is not
a collection of discrete tracks, but a single, unfolding experience - one that draws the
listener deeper into the atmosphere of this singular terrain.
To listen is to wander the Driftless itself: to feel its storms and its stillness, to pause within
its vastness, and to sense the continuity of a land that has endured, largely unchanged, while
the world around it has transformed.
From the earliest conception of this project, I envisioned a visual counterpart that could
stand alongside the music in both spirit and sensibility. For this, I turned to the work of
landscape photographer, Geoffrey Mikol, of Galena, Illinois. His photographs - long a source
of inspiration - are marked by a profound sensitivity to light, season, and atmosphere.
Through his lens, the region reveals itself in quiet moments: mist settling into valleys,
winter fields suspended in stillness, light tracing the contours of ancient bluffs, and rivers
moving with an almost imperceptible patience.
Geoffrey’s work does not simply document the Driftless; it interprets it. His images carry the
same sense of time, continuity, and presence that defines the music, making them a natural
extension of the suite’s intent. The visual component of this release - including the cover,
inner sleeve, and a 12-page booklet - features a curated selection of his photography,
offering a parallel path through the landscape and deepening the listener’s experience of
place.
